The SULTANA: A Documenatry (UPDATED)

SCROLL TO THE BOTTOM FOR LATEST UPDATE

April 27th, 1865. The big headline news of the day: Johns Wilkes Booth, President Lincoln's assassin, was shot and killed the previous day. Most people are unaware of another major event that happened on this day, which was the greatest Maritime disaster in United States history. Overshadowed by the end of the war and President Lincoln’s assassination, the wooden steamship, SS Sultana, carrying over 2,400 passengers, most of whom were Union Soldiers, exploded and sank in the Mississippi river. More than 1,800 lives were lost that day as the Sultana was on route from St. Louis to New Orleans.

"The SULTANA was overloaded with over 2,300 Union soldiers, newly released POW’s on their way back home after surviving the horrors of Civil War prison camps. This accident wasn’t only tragic because POW’s died on the way home; it’s not just tragic because greed-driven men squeezed well over 2,000 individuals onto a vessel licensed to carry 367 passengers; the Sultana disaster is tragic because it was covered up and, ultimately, forgotten. Greed, drama, and humanity make the Sultana a story to remember." --excerpt from the Kickstarter page.

Producer Mark Marshall, together with Sean Astin, executive producer, have teamed together to bring you a documentary of the Sultana tragedy. With only a little over two days left in their Kickstarter campaign they need your help to reach their goal of $75,000.
